We caught up with Jett Lawrence at press day yesterday in San Diego before the riders hit the track (and obviously before he had his crash). Here's what he had to say:

First off, initial thoughts on the track?
It looks not bad, obviously it looks different compared to how it rides most of the time, so we will see how it rides. We will see that in a little bit and I can probably give a proper answer then.
Talk us through last week and the mud and how you felt.
It was a complete shit show. It sucked. Most of the time I love racing that stuff and riding my dirt bike. But that one I was like please end. I have a bit of a snotty nose and a bit of a cold cause we got wet, soaking wet, cold, and had to ride back on scooters in the rain. Wasn’t a very ideal weekend. It’s definitely not making my favourite weekend list for sure. It was something else.
Does being the first mud race on the Honda 450 mean anything? Did you learn stuff at least?
We learned a few things setting wise we can change to help a little bit. But it’s hard. It’s rare to get a mud race and now we are going to have back-to-back mud races. Hopefully we don’t. But setting-side of things we learned.
I have a general question about pressure and anxiety. Everyone favors you for the title after the success you had last year outdoors and in SMX. Does that get to you?
Obviously it’s natural to think about that stuff and it’s put pressure on me. But I’ve never been much of a person to show it much. I kinda just bottle it all up and don’t show it. I feel that’s messed up, but that’s just part of our sport. If I complain about it it’s not going to change anything. It is what is is, I just kinda deal with.
Do you ever feel it on the gate?
Not too much. On the gate I’m more focused on what the task at hand is.
Last question. Being from Australia, moving to Europe at such a young age and now living in the U.S.; do you identify as American? Do you miss home in Australia?
I love America. It’s like a new home. We’ve made a lot of friends and family here. In Aus I miss our foods there a lot and my best mate and his family the most. We obviously have grandparents there that we miss too and more family members. But Australia is nice to go back to. I miss the surf there too. But besides those few things, I don’t think I would go back and live there again. I like America quite a bit.
