Welcome back to Andrea's Angle, a column showcasing my perspective as a newbie to Supercross. Last week, my parents actually attended their very first Supercross! We're going to do things a little differently this week - I'm going to let them take over and share their thoughts and reflections on Detroit.
Ford Field in Detroit was our first time attending a Supercross event. We loved seeing the family environment; lots of Moms and Dads in attendance with their children. Also lots of energy in the stadium and fans focused on the action. When we attended a New York Nets NBA basketball game some time ago, we noticed that most people were busy with their food and drink and conversations. In contrast, the majority of fans at the Supercross event seemed really focused on the races (well maybe not the kids eating pizza and popcorn).
We really liked the green light on front of the bike that is in first place; it makes it so much easier to follow the leader. We think they should also put different colored lights for the second and third place riders as well. Maybe yellow for second place and red for third. This would help Newbies like us follow the leaders, especially when they start to lap the field.
We were already familiar with some of the notable 450 class names on the Supercross tour, including Jett Lawrence, Chase Sexton, Ken Roczen, Cooper Webb and Aaron Plessinger. And those riders did not let us down in Detroit as they all appeared as top 6 finishers, including the winner - the rockstar Jett Lawrence. We are now familiar with Jason Anderson, who came in 5th place.
We would compare Supercross to Ice Hockey: it’s nice to watch on TV, but to really get an appreciation for the sport you need to see it live at the stadium. And now that we have, we can’t wait to see our next event - whether it be on TV or in an arena. Note: we are already planning ahead for AMA Supercross in Nashville! In summary, we had a great experience attending our first Supercross event. After the race has started, and the riders have filled out the track, it is quite a sight to behold!
Big thanks to my parents for making the trip out to Detroit and sitting through not only the race but even some of qualifying! We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming next week in Glendale.
Until then,
Andrea Ruggiero
