As per usual, we have the opening rounds in California, with the 4th round in neighboring Arizona. The first 3 rounds are within a nice ~2 hour drive of each other: Anaheim to San Diego and back to Anaheim. For any looking for a nice sunny (hopefully) and warm start to their year you are in luck! Come down and watch the first few supercrosses!
Feld is doubling down on the northeast market it seems. It wasn’t too long ago (prior to 2014) where we didn’t have a single Supercross in the northeast. For most of the past decade Feld had alternated between MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford (Greater NYC area) and Gillette Stadium in Foxboro (Greater Boston area), but that remained the sole event for the Nor’easter fans. Last year we ventured into Philly to add a second event in the region… apparently that went well because we now have 4 races! Boston, NYC, Philly, and Pittsburgh. Is the Northeast the new California?
Personally, I think the baseball stadium floor shape offers for the most unique and exciting track designs (i.e. look at how great Anaheim normally is). In years past, we’ve had up to 5 or 6 baseball stadiums to start the year… this year only 2 (just Anaheim). We used to have Padre’s stadium in SD, but the series has switched to the college football stadium for the past few years which appears to be a permanent switch. Oakland used to offer a great floor space, but that appears to be off the table too. Last year, instead of Oakland we went to Giant’s stadium across the bay in SF; that apparently was super expensive and wasn’t great for the pit set-up. We used to also have 3 Anaheims; now we’ve reduced that to 2. Anaheim is the sole baseball venue left… super disappointing and I hope that changes in years to come!
Note: with baseball season starting at the end of March, and most having real grass, Feld is limited to these venues for just the January and February rounds.
Whatever happened to the glory days of the domes? We have only 4 closed-roof venues this year… that leaves potentially 13 weekends of rain to worry about! In practice, the rain typically isn’t that bad, but last year we saw quite a bit of it and lots of super soft tracks as a result. I’d like the series to go back to some of the roofed venues: Minneapolis, Houston, and St. Louis to name a few.
The last couple of years had the same schedule for Pro Motocross… it’s basically the same again this year, but we’ve moved Ironman up and pushed Budds Creek back to the series finale. Maybe this is because of Ironman hosting the MXoN later in the year? Regardless, it’ll be exciting to have the series wrap up in a different location!
It’s always so exciting to see the new schedule! Firstly, seeing the sport come to new venues is awesome: this year we have Pittsburgh, plus a return to Tampa. Secondly, we can all start planning our travel and vacations! For instance, book that Cali beach trip; or, perhaps visit NYC and Boston! Overall, SuperMotocross visits many desirable destinations across the country. We had the privilege of attending all Supercross races last year and getting to know these cities… stay tuned as we launch some exciting travel features to the site! Excited for more travel and racing next year!
