Rough start to the season—where are you at mentally? How do you rebound?
Mentally, I’m fine. I think I’m strong in that regard. As hard as it has been after the races, it actually makes me excited because there’s no way to go but up. It can’t get worse, so the only direction is forward. That’s motivating for me. I’ve been feeling good—it’s just about eliminating the mistakes and capitalizing on opportunities.
Is there any element where this is almost a blessing in disguise? The championship pressure is probably off your shoulders now, and you can just go out and ride unburdened.
Yeah, for sure. Now I can focus on winning races for real. With that pressure off me, I’m not even sure where I am in points—probably around 20th—but the championship pressure is gone for now, and I can just work on climbing back up.
How are you feeling physically? We know you had a crash in San Diego—are you all good?
Yeah, all good. I felt fine about two days after that crash. Overall, my body feels good, my fitness is solid, and the bike feels great. I just need to put the number seven back up front.
Have you been going back and forth between Florida and California?
No, I’ve been in California since the Sunday before Anaheim 1, so I’ve been away for quite a while. My wife was supposed to come out last weekend, but she got sick. I haven’t seen the kids in almost a month now. After this race, I finally get to fly back home, and I’m really excited about that.
