How does it feel to finally be racing the new bike?

Oh, it feels good. I've been waiting for this day for a while. I’ve dreamt about what it would be like to ride this bike for a long time. I'm just stoked to be in this position. I'm as prepared as I’m probably going to get, and we’re in a good spot. I’m with a good team and excited to get things going on a great bike.

You mentioned that this is like a dream to be on this program, but how did riding this bike come about? Was it something you actively pursued, or did they reach out to you?

I’ve had a couple of opportunities to come over, but for whatever reason, it never worked out. Last year, I wasn’t sure what GasGas’ plans were. It was midseason, and I was searching. I wasn’t performing my best, and I wasn’t happy. I ended up getting ahold of Bobby, and we were trying to make something happen, but it was tough because he already had a full pro team. There were guys supposedly locked in, and he told me there wasn’t room. Then, last minute, a spot opened up. So, I jumped on it, and I’m excited.

How do you feel coming into this season compared to last year?

Compared to last year, I just feel… I hate to say it, but I’m one of the veterans now. It’s crazy—I’m only 22, but I’ve been in this class for a while. I know how these guys race, I’m familiar with everyone, and that in itself makes a difference. Plus, the offseason I’ve had, riding with so many guys at the farm, has been great. I feel more prepared than ever, and I’m confident I can get it done.

Did it take a while to adjust to the bike?

Not really. The first two weeks, I felt right at home—I was stoked. Then, I transitioned from just learning the bike to actually racing it with the other guys. That’s when mistakes started showing up, and we really had to dial in the setup. But once we got over that hurdle, it’s been smooth. We’ve put in plenty of consecutive days on the bike, and I’m more prepared than ever. So, I’m excited.

It’s not just the bike that’s different, but the whole program, right? Being out there, riding with so many guys—how different is that? Do you think it’s better, or is it similar to what you were doing last year?

Yeah, it’s a lot different, for sure. The environment itself is huge—I have eight guys I ride with every day, sometimes more. There’s a big group that really keeps me honest. That’s what the Star program is known for—iron sharpening iron. It pushes you to be the best version of yourself.
