Indy! First 250E/W Showdown of the year…. who were the Most Impressive riders from each class?

450 Class: Cooper Webb

For the first time this year, Webb get’s the honor of being Most Impressive. He has had lots of great rides aiready this year, but his race in Indy was something special; have we ever seen Webb this good? I think he was fired up from his qualifying crash… he rocketed off to a great start in the heat, but then crashed in the sand. I then think he was even more fired up for the main after crashing in his heat… he rocketed off to a great start, quickly passed into the lead, and never looked back.

What’s Most Impressive about his win is not the great start and leading all laps, but rather his incredible speed he showed on the way. Sexton (who has been the fastest in the past several rounds) had nothing for him tonight… that’s a statement ride for Webb. Webb rarely straight up pulls away and sets the fastest laps, but something was different in Indy, and that should be scary for his competitors.

It was “cruise-control” for Webb:

“I was pissed off. I made a lot of mistakes today. Man, that was an awesome main event for me, probably one of the easier ones of my career. Got a good lead and could ride the pace. Obviously when Chase went down it really opened up the cushion. … I executed my start, rode great laps in the beginning and then put it on cruise control and (had a) drama-free race.”

250 Class: Cole Davies

Unlike Webb, Cole Davies has won this honor 3 times already this year: that’s 3 out of 6 races for him. He keeps getting better, and was one of the fastest 250 guys in Indy. He crashed in the opening laps and was way back in 17th, but somehow managed to pass through an incredibly stacked/deep 250 E/W field all the way back to 5th; super Impressive. It was an incredible comeback ride.

The kid continues to impress, almost to the point where we’re used to it now right? It’s just a given that Davies can/will run up front and be a contender for race wins every time he lines up. He has yet to get that first win, although he did win two Triple Crown races in Glendale, and no doubt that first race win is soon to come. Next year he can be a title threat, which is crazy considering he’s a rookie and we didn’t have these high expectations for him entering the season. We’re ultra impressed with him!

Here’s what he had to say about the night:

“Man, it could have been a really good night for me. I ended up going down early in the main event and was way back, but I reset and made my way through the pack the best I could and came back from 17th to fifth. I’m really happy with my riding tonight, but I need to limit the mistakes. I rode one time at The Farm since Arlington because I was super sick the last couple of weeks, so all in all, it was still a really good night for me, but I’m always wanting more. I’m looking forward to Seattle.”

Honorable mentions to RJ Hampshire and Max Vohland who had great rides through the pack as well in the 250 class.
