Webb won that race in such a classic Webb fashion: pass the leader late on a rutted, soft, tough track. It’s truly impressive how he does this time after time, especially in this case when Sexton had previously caught up to and pulled away from Webb. Instead of settling for 2nd, Webb continued putting down fast laps, pressured Sexton, and eventually capitalized on a mistake to make the pass for the lead. He also had the fastest lap of the race.
Here’s what he had to say about his day:
“I really wanted that one. Me and Kenny [Roczen] were going back and forth. Then Chase got both of us and yeah, it was time to go! I had to get there with Kenny, I got around him, and then it was game on. It was so gnarly. I wish people could get a POV of the track and the ruts and the lappers. That was one of the gnarliest tracks that I’ve ever ridden and that was an absolute slugfest, two of the best guys right now going for it. You had to ride that fine line. He had that rhythm [line] that was a lot faster but I just kept charging and couldn’t let him get two in a row, that’s for sure. I want to give it up to the good Lord. These fans were awesome all night, we could hear them over our bikes… Like I said, this is strictly business.”
Somehow the 17-year old kid continues to impress… this time, he gets the win! Davies quickly passed into the lead and started to pull away; no-one was able to consistently match his speed. In particular, his whoop speed is super impressive! We asked him about it at the post-race press conference and he simply said: “gotta let it hang”. We’ve honored Davies as being Most Impressive many times already this year; now that he has won, what’s next?
He also somehow is super confident. When asked in the press conference by Mitch Kendra at Racer X, Davies mentioned that winning is not a surprise: he expects to win every time he lines up! Very impressive.
In classic Davies fashion, his statement about the night was short and to-the-point:
“It’s been a long journey. It’s a lot of work to get here. I can’t thank the people enough who helped me get here… I feel like this one’s been long overdue. I’m stoked to get this one done, and I needed that.”
